What is acne?
Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles become clogged with oil (sebum), bacteria, and dead skin cells. It often appears as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts and can range from mild to severe. Acne is most common on the face, chest, back, and shoulders.
What Causes Acne?
- Excess oil (sebum) production – Overactive sebaceous glands can block pores.
- Bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) – Bacteria multiply in clogged pores, causing inflammation.
- Hormonal fluctuations – Increased androgens (e.g., during puberty, pregnancy, or hormonal imbalances) can trigger breakouts.
- Diet & lifestyle – High-sugar diets, dairy, stress, and certain medications can contribute to acne.
- Genetics – Some people are more prone to acne due to hereditary factors.
